In the southern parts of Tamil Nadu, which include Thirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Tenkasi, there was an unrelenting downpour the Sunday before. Over the last few days, extremely heavy rains have been falled in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari and part of Tenkasi, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram districts located on the southern margin of Tamil Nadu. In response to this climate catastrophe, the government sent senior officials immediately for an appraisal of the gravity of the situation in some of the hardest hit areas.

Both the Meteorological Department and independent weather analysts have predicted that extremely heavy precipitation will continue until Tuesday. The only river that originates in Tamil Nadu and flows only through the state, Thamirabarani, is currently flooded despite concerted efforts to reduce the rising water levels.

Forty lakes in the Kovilpatti area have filled to capacity, according to an ANI report. Thoothukkudi district’s District Development Officer, Rajesh, confirmed, “The forty lakes under Kovilpatti Panchayat control are currently full.” Despite damage to two lakes, repairs were made quickly. Other lakes are under constant surveillance, and we are ready to respond and make the necessary corrections if there are any violations.”

As the Nilgiris district was hit by rains, reports of a mudslide began to come in at Ooty. Dr. L. Murugan, Union Minister, supervised the clearance operations for the landslide on the Ooty Mettupalayam road. Numerous flash flooding incidents have been recorded in all parts of Thoothukudi. In response to the adverse weather, the district administration has started work on repairing breaches of water bodies.

As a result of persistent heavy rain over the last two days, Tamil Nadu experienced a flood-like situation, forcing the cancellation of several trains and the rerouting of numerous flights. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a red alert for four districts: Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Tenkasi. The weather service also stated that a cyclonic circulation is currently present over the Comorin area and its surrounding regions, extending up to mid-tropospheric levels.

According to reports from southern Tamil Nadu, rainwater reaching a height of five to six feet inundated homes in a number of neighborhoods. Many residents took to social media to request help from the authorities. As a result of these adverse conditions, several towns are cut off from the rest of the district.

250 personnel from the State Disaster Response Forces (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, and Tenkasi as part of a proactive initiative. Additional State Disaster Response Force personnel are expected to arrive in the Tenkasi district today. KKSSR Ramachandran, Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management, stated that he will personally visit flood-affected areas.
